Computer Training

Basic Computer Training Program

This program began in the late 1990’s and continues to be sought after; it brings many women to the Centre and is often an entry point for further interest and participation in other aspects of the Centre’s functions. NSWC volunteers work from a manual guideline to deliver the lessons, but mostly tailor and customize each lesson to suit the needs of their students. They provide lesson instruction on a one-to-one basis. The material offered to the women receiving the classes will depend on their level of competency and computer literacy.  The program is designed to fit in 6 one-hour lessons: 1 lesson to introduce the basic components of a computer, 3 lessons to cover Microsoft Word, one lesson on how to use the Internet, one lesson on how to create an e-mail account.

The training of volunteers to become instructors in the program covers topics such as different learning styles and how best to adapt the lessons to suit the students’ learning styles, etc. The reasons that women participate in this program vary greatly and range from gaining employment skills and skills up-dates, to breaking of isolation through communication with family and friends, interaction with instructors and staff of the Centre, as well as keeping up with technology. The duality of this program has been remarkable as both student and instructor benefit from their experience. Many of our volunteers/instructors find work often as a result of increased confidence in their skills and comfort in an office environment.

From 2004 until March 2009, 138 students have been instructed through the program. 32 students have been instructed in Farsi with over 35 being taught in a combination of English and one other language (e.g. French, Spanish, Tagalog, German, Arabic, etc.). The remainders were taught in English only. Currently, 6 students are being instructed.

Registration is required.
